[This message has been edited by toughguy12 (edited 05-06-2001).] Toughguy, Erik ------------------DaDaDa316 I have to do a project in school on what the functions of a castle were and talk about a castles interior structure. Does anyone have any ideas for a project I can do in about 4 days, which doesn't including building a castle. Unless, there's a fast and easy way to construct a castle and make it look like I put a lot of work into it. DaDaDa316 Oh yeah, and my age is 15 if that is any help, so the project is going to need to look like it had some quality work put into it. toughguy12 DaDaDa316,
Castles 99% of the time were for armies and controlling land. Castles are giant fortresses. Inside a castle, you'd have a small town. Some buildings would include: Gatehouse, kitchen, great hall, armory, houses, grainery, stable, and of course, the keep.DaDaDa316 Thanks, for you help toughguy, but I need ideas on a visual project to show for my presentation in front of the class. My ideas right now are make a castle floor plan and build a castle, I really don't want to build a castle, though. That would take so much work. Erik Schmidt DaDa, so you want to make a project that looks like it had quality time put into it but which in fact hasn't! Sounds like a school assignmennt to me.
If you have to talk about castle interiors then large cutaway diagrams of various parts of a castle would be good. There should be a book full of that sort of stuff at the local library. Draw a cutaway section of a keep, wall, tower, gatehouse and kitchen, each on a large piece of paper that everyone in the class can see.
Try reading a book or some good web sites about castles. You may just find out what real castles were like.
Castles are still not giant fortresses, no matter how many times you say it. Most castles did not contain small towns, but you are correct about the facilities you list.
Most castles contained enough buildings for the lord(and family) along with a few soldiers and other staff. In the middle ages most armies were temporary, formed in times of war and rarely housed within a castle. Yes, castles were for controlling the surrounding area, but this was done with small groups of men, not whole armies.
I know reality can sometimes mess up our preconceived ideas, but please don't let it become subservient to your preconceived ideas.Gordon What about posters or overhead projections? You'll find lots of castle drawings and cut away duiagrams on my web page, or one or two in the photo archive. There are also some good articles for explanation.
'Demeure par la verite'
Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page Fox Atreides Just want to say that what erik saus is perfectly right, but don't think there where no giant fortresses with towns in it at all, for they were there, though not many.
O yeah, no matter how many sites you visit, a book still is a great source of info, if isn't the best (for projects)DaDaDa316 Thanks for your help everyone, I have it down to doing some large drawing of the important sections or doing a blueprint.
